Girls Dormitory Building handed over to Melamchi Ghyang Secondary School with support from International Foundation for Education and Entrepreneurship (iffee) Switzerland
The project delivers safe, well-equipped accommodation for 136 girl students in Melamchi Ghyang Secondary School. The newly constructed Girls’ Dormitory Building at Melamchi Ghyang Secondary School in Helambu Rural Municipality–01, Melamchi Ghyang, has been formally inaugurated and handed over to the school community, marking a significant milestone in improving residential facilities for girl students on 7 November 2025. The facility, financial support from International Foundation for Education and Entrepreneurship (iffee) Switzerland, technical quality assurance from Turnkey Development Group Nepal, and construction by New Tech Engineering, the hostel is designed to provide safe, dignified, and comfortable accommodation for 136 students, particularly those traveling long distances from remote settlements.
The dormitory, completed over 18 months is earthquake resilient and heat insulated with rat trap brick and double glazed windows with a total investment of NPR 42.2 million, features 10 toilet cabins, 3 hot-water shower cabins, and a dedicated incinerator connection to ensure safe and hygienic management of sanitary waste for adolescent girls. In addition to the infrastructure upgrade, iffee Switzerland has been supporting broader initiatives in sanitation and hygiene, mental health and psychosocial wellbeing, and teaching support for Grades 11 and 12, contributing to a holistic and nurturing school environment. To enhance comfort and support effective learning, each of the 136 resident students has received a personal set of furniture including a bed, study table, chair, and cupboard along with mattresses and curtains. By combining improved residential facilities with comprehensive psychosocial and educational support, the project is expected to significantly enhance the well-being and overall academic performance at Melamchi Ghyang Secondary School.
During the inauguration ceremony, the founder and the president of iffee Mr. Christoph Dürmüller has committed to continue to support on quality education and entrepreneurship including well-being of students, particularly targeting the Helambu region in the initial period. The Chairperson of Helambu Rural Municipality, Mr. Nima Gyalgen Sherpa, thanked IFFEE for its dedicated support to the education sector. He reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to sustaining these infrastructures and expressed interest in replicating this model of quality dormitories and improved learning environments in other schools. The member secretary Mr. Manoj Bhatta of Social Welfare Council was positively surprised to see the quality construction in such a remote but beautiful place. He also asked the school management committee to ensure the sustainability of supported interventions from the project. Mr. Peter Eppler, the Country Director for iffee’s Nepal program, who has been contributing to socio-economic and education development in Nepal for more than 10 years, highlighted the need for integrating theory and practice to improve the overall education quality.
The inauguration of the Melamchi Ghyang Secondary School girls’ dormitory marks a significant milestone in strengthening educational infrastructure, student welfare, and holistic development in Helambu Rural Municipality. With the combined effort of iffee Switzerland, Turnkey Development Group Nepal, the Helambu Rural Municipality and the local community, the project not only provides safe and comfortable living facilities for 136 students but also reinforces sanitation, hygiene, and psychosocial well-being. Stakeholders expressed hope that this initiative will serve as a model for other schools, ensuring sustainable improvements in both infrastructure and teaching-learning environments across the region.
